QVC lets consumers try on beauty products virtually

QVC has launched an augmented reality app that allows consumers to try on makeup before purchasing.

QVC is partnering with Perfect Corp. to offer the first television AR beauty purchase experience.

To enable this new shopping channel, QVC collaborated with YouCam Makeup to launch a virtual try-on app for a selection of Laura Geller New York beauty products. The products will be featured on QVC’s Today’s Special Value on Aug. 22.

Viewers will be able to tap try-ons and virtually test the products in all color and finish options directly from their mobile devices.

This new buying option combines advances in AR technologies with broadcast and mobile for a real-time shopping experience. YouCam’s technology takes into account skin tones and shades to make the experience as lifelike as possible. Consumers can immediately shop for Laura Geller New York products from their mobile device.

“This unique collaboration with QVC is reinventing the beauty shopping experience by giving beauty lovers the chance to try featured products before committing to a purchase,” said Perfect Corp. CEO Alice Chang. “YouCam Makeup strives to push the boundaries of innovation and continues to solve and serve all of our beauty customer and brand needs. We addressed what can be a common pain point of home shopping—return rates—and introduced a virtual trial experience to ensure shoppers could feel confident in their purchase decisions."

Combining their strengths, YouCam Makeup and QVC help make the shopping experience easier for consumers by offering the best augmented reality beauty shopping experience.

"One of the difficult points of home shopping is the return rates, so by offering a trial experience that empowers users to instantly try on products prior to purchase, we are allowing consumers to feel confident in their purchases without any hesitation," Chang told FierceRetail.

While the teams are confident that consumers will love the new technology, the only hurdle, according to Adam Gam, vice president of marketing at Perfect Corp. is making sure that consumers have the app. Therefore, QVC has simplified the process for customers by asking them to text “QVC” to 20800 and instantly receive the free YouCam download code. Once the app is on a user's phone, they can quickly and conveniently try on the products for an easy virtual beauty experience.

"This partnership has proven that a virtual trial experience will put consumers at ease. By allowing consumers to try on the product prior to purchasing with the most accurate augmented reality beauty technology available, you are ensuring that they will be happy with the outcome," Chang added.
