Dollar General opens 13,000th store

Dollar General (NYSE:DG) officially opened the company's 13,000th location this Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama. It marks a milestone for the 77-year-old retailer even as it plans to continues its path of aggressive store growth.

"This morning's grand opening celebration commemorates a major milestone for Dollar General and reflects our unwavering commitment and dedication to provide convenience and everyday low prices to the communities we serve," said Todd Vasos, Dollar General CEO, in a statement. "On behalf of the entire Dollar General leadership team, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dollar General employees, our communities, local governments and business partners who continually support our mission of Serving Others as we look to deliver the Dollar General business model to communities across the country."

Dollar General will add close to 900 stores this year and plans another 1,000 in 2017. Close competitor Dollar Tree is also expanding after its acquisition of Family Dollar.
