Get ready for AmazonFresh, the brick-and-mortar edition, as new documents reveal a vision for up to 2,000 grocery stores planned for the brand.
There will be 20 test locations open by the end of 2018 in various markets including Seattle, New York, Miami, Las Vegas and the Bay Area.
There will also be variations to the format during the test process, with half functioning as drive-up click-and-collect locations. The first such format is currently under construction in the Seattle area.
The remaining 10 will more closely resemble a traditional market, but there is some internal discussion about whether to make these concepts available to the general public or only to members of Amazon's Prime Fresh program, where members pay an additional $15 monthly fee on top of the Prime membership, according to Business Insider.
Business Insider reviewed internal documents that showed store sizes ranging from 10,000 sq. ft. for pickup locations and 30,000 sq. ft. for the traditional shops.
Of course, this being Amazon, new technology is being developed for the concepts including license plate scanning and in-store kiosks.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the initiative will add stand-alone locations where shoppers can order items from their mobile devices or in-store touchscreens for same-day delivery, as well as the option to simply drive up and collect online orders.

But Amazon has struggled to gain traction with the AmazonFresh program. The rollout has gone slowly and is now in just 17 markets, 12 years after launching.
Grocery is an $800 billion market, the largest of all product categories, and consumers can be fiercely loyal to their supermarket of choice. U.S. shoppers have been slow to use online options, including AmazonFresh, although omnichannel options such as buying online and picking up at the store are slowly making inroads.
