Wegmans announced the launch of its own mobile grocery app that allows for a virtual shopping experience in order to simplify the in-store experience. The app includes the ability to build shopping lists, upload recipes and view store layouts.
Although the company's app may one day be able to offer home delivery, it currently serves as a place to build a shopping list, reported BostInno. Customers can search for items, scan the bar codes of the items they have in their homes or browse virtual aisles, which correspond to the layout of the Wegmans location of their choice.
Original store recipes are also stored in the app, so a user can add recipe ingredients to a list or share the list with family members.
Other features include an estimated bill, cooking videos, sale items, a blog and pharmacy services.
Wegmans is no stranger to digital integration. The supermarket chain is testing out a click-and-collect program called "personal shopping" in a Pittsford, New York, store. The cost is $10 per order plus 25 cents per item scanned.
Click-and-collect is an emerging trend among U.S. grocers as they try and compete with grocery delivery services such as AmazonFresh (NASDAQ:AMZN), Instacart and FreshDirect.
In a Consumer Reports survey released last spring, Wegmans, along with Trader Joe's, ranked as one of the top grocery stores in the country by customers. Wegmans scored high points for prepared foods and for having the fewest complaints among its customers, despite having the second-highest rating for prices, proof that shoppers are willing to pay a little more if they can count on a pleasurable experience.
