Walmart (NYSE:WMT) is inviting suppliers to the company's second "Made in the USA" Open Call and U.S. Manufacturing Summit. During the event, suppliers will have the opportunity to pitch their products to be sold at Walmart.
Walmart hosted the first-ever Open Call last summer, hosting more than 800 meetings with resultant deals on hundreds of new products.
"Open Call is a unique opportunity to find great products made or assembled by American workers. With these suppliers, we can increase domestic manufacturing through our commitment to purchase more U.S.-made goods benefitting our customers and communities," said Cindi Marsiglio, VP of sourcing and manufacturing at Walmart U.S. "We know that sourcing products closer to the point of consumption has tremendous benefits to our business."
In 2013, Walmart announced the company would purchase an additional $250 billion in products supporting U.S. jobs over the next 10 years. The multi-pronged approach to this goal includes increased purchasing of U.S. manufactured goods, sourcing "new to Walmart" goods, and supporting the replenishment of goods the retailer already buys.
"During our first Open Call event, we made deals with suppliers of all sizes, from those selling product in thousands of our stores to those supplying to just a few," Marsiglio said. "As we continue to grow our online assortments, we added new items to Walmart.com and currently offer more than 22,000 products online supporting U.S. jobs."
Beyond an increased focus on U.S.-made products, Walmart has made other operational and strategic changes since the start of 2015. CEO of U.S. operations Greg Foran pledged a bigger commitment to customer service and better employee engagement, which includes an increase in minimum wage earnings.
