Walmart (NYSE:WMT) announced it will launch its retail app in Canada, and will also add on an incentive for first-time users in the United States.
Launching in Canada, Walmart is hoping to encourage in-store use north of the border, while also offering a gift card to the new users of the app in the United States.
"We are always looking for ways to enhance our customers' shopping experience," said Rick Neuman, executive VP of technology and e-commerce at Walmart Canada.
Canadian customers will be able to use the app to make purchases, get information and receive help in-store. The app also remembers reoccurring purchases and adds them to customers' favorite lists. A weekly flyer deal is shared via the app, as is a notification when favorite items are on rollback.
For U.S. customers, a first-time user who makes a purchase of $75 or more within the mobile platform will receive a $10 e-gift card.
Sales on Walmart Pay recently increased 45 percent week-over-week following the completion of the rollout to all stores earlier this month. The big-box retailer began rolling out Walmart Pay in May after introducing it as a test in December. Also in the realm of mobile, Walmart recently tightened its hold on the mobile delivery channel by partnering with Deliv, Uber and Lyft.
