Walmart (NYSE:WMT) is reviving the idea of putting greeters in the entrances of stores, both to improve customer service and deter theft. Three years ago, the retailer moved greeters away from the doors so that these staff members could point shoppers to open registers and clean up shelves, but now Walmart is testing whether to move them back.
Greeters will resume their spot at 300 Walmart entrances in the United States. Some doors will also have "asset protection customer specialists" to not only greet, but also check receipts to deter shoplifting, the Wall Street Journal reported. These APCS workers will wear a bright yellow vest.
The plan is all part of Walmart's focus to boost profitability in the United States. The company recently announced a hike in employee minimum wages to $10 an hour, starting next February, partly as a way to boost moral and give workers an incentive to be helpful to shoppers. The raise in wages is part of a larger $1 billion plan, outlined back in February, that would improve employee training programs and give hourly workers more control over their schedules.
Walmart lost 0.13 percentage points off of its last quarterly gross profit margin due to theft or disorder, and last year the company's sales shrank by 0.12 percentage points.
