Walgreens (NYSE:WAG) and WebMD announced a partnership to encourage U.S. shoppers to make healthier choices through incentives. The collaboration will include bringing WebMD's virtual wellness coaching programs to Walgreens customers, incorporating WebMD content into the digital experience and stores, and offering prescription refills online.
The companies are working together to incorporate WebMD content on a variety of health topics, co-branded by the two entities, into a digital experience and in Walgreens stores. In addition, visitors to WebMD will be able to use Walgreens prescription refill and clinic appointment scheduling options directly on the WebMD site.
"We're excited to work with WebMD to provide our customers with new health resources," said Alex Gourlay, president, customer experience and daily living, Walgreens. "Customers of both companies will benefit from WebMD's digital engagement tools combined with assistance from Walgreens community pharmacists and nurse practitioners to help them adopt healthy lifestyles. As an added benefit, these consumers also can take advantage of the incentives included in Walgreens Balance Rewards for healthy choices program."
In the spring, Walgreens launched a "Way to Well" tour to provide free health tests, assessments, education and consulting services to communities across the country.
WebMD and Walgreens are focused on bringing three major offers to consumers in the coming months. First, Walgreens will incorporate into its digital experience and stores select WebMD content in various topic areas ranging from allergy, eating, and healthy aging to heart health, sleep and oral health.
Second, Walgreens will offer WebMD's virtual wellness-coaching programs on topics such as smoking cessation, weight management, nutrition and stress management.
Finally, Walgreens will offer customers loyalty points for participating in healthy programs through its Balance Rewards program. The companies will also integrate the Balance Rewards for healthy choices program into WebMD's Healthy Target health improvement program, available through an app, to earn rewards.
Walgreens has been making changes lately to try and make shopping easier for consumers, including its recent partnership with Apple (NASDAQ:APPL) to offer customers virtual payment through Apple Pay.
