Walgreens, WebMD launch rewards, prescription app

Walgreens (NASDAQ:WBA) has partnered with WebMD to integrate the pharmacy's rewards and prescription services into WebMD's flagship mobile app. The partnership will also allow customers on Walgreens.com to gain access to Your Digital Health Advisor, a virtual wellness coaching program, powered by WebMD.

"Today marks the first significant milestone in WebMD's collaboration with Walgreens to expand access to information and services that can help millions of consumers achieve their health and wellness goals," said Dr. Steven Zatz, president, WebMD.

Your Digital Health Advisor helps users create customized goals and actions to support lifestyle changes from everything from smoking cessation to emotional health. Walgreens Pharmacy Chat health experts are also available to provide live coaching and help encourage positive lifestyle choices. Participants earn Walgreens Balance Rewards points for making progress.

Now, in addition to tracking progress, WebMD's Healthy Target mobile program users will earn Balance Rewards points as an incentive. The Healthy Target is available with WebMD's flagship mobile app for iPhone, and lets users upload biometric device data from activity trackers, wireless scales, and glucometers and to receive physician-reviewed tips.

Also now within the WebMD app, Walgreens customers can refill and transfer prescriptions. Consumers simply scan the barcode on their prescription or manually enter the information to send refill information to their local pharmacy.

"By integrating WebMD's wellness coaching services and trusted content into Walgreens online and in-store experience, together we are creating an experience for consumers that will empower and motivate them to make healthier decisions," said Adam Pellegrini, VP of digital health at Walgreens.

Walgreens and WebMD first a began a partnership back in October, when they announced their plans to bring WebMD's virtual wellness coaching programs to Walgreens customers, to incorporate WebMD content into the digital experience and stores, and to offer prescription refills online.

Furthering its reach in the mobile world, Walgreens announced last month a new partnership with telehealth service provider MDLIVE to offer customers a virtual doctor visit. Customers on the Walgreens website can now access a U.S. board-certified doctor, any time of day, through its mobile application.
