Walgreens opens flagship in Chicago's Wrigley Building

Walgreens (NYSE:WAG) unveiled its latest flagship store in Chicago. The location is both in a landmark and provides a peek into the retailer's latest store format.

The two-story location at 410 N. Michigan Ave. in the landmark building is the company's 14th flagship store, and the third in Chicago. It features a unique exterior design to complement the building's exterior. A mosaic floor motif of the building's famous clock welcomes customers as they enter off of Michigan Avenue.

There are terra cotta stone walls, customized radiators and ivory marble floors and countertops to match the historical elements of the iconic Wrigley Building, reported the Chicago Tribune.

"We are very excited to open a Walgreens flagship store in the Wrigley Building, bringing together two iconic names in Chicago business," said Mark Wagner, Walgreens president of operations and community management. "The store will serve as a destination for health and daily living that offers our customers an exceptional experience."

The store replaces another location less than a block away and serves a busy stretch of Michigan Avenue populated by office workers and tourists alike.

Like other Walgreens' flagship stores, the unit features new backlit displays and lower shelving runs, a dedicated Look Beauty Boutique and expanded selection of prepared foods including sushi made on site.

The store opening in Chicago coincides with news that Walgreens is considering moving its corporate headquarters from the Chicago suburbs to Europe following the completed Alliance Boots acquisition. The chain purchased an interest in Boots and is now under pressure from investors to relocate for tax benefits.

Walgreens said earlier this week it would have a statement or decision on the subject later this summer.
