Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN) asked current employees if they would pitch in and work some extra shifts on the weekends, but not get paid for it.
With the holidays approaching and weekend business picking up, the specialty clothing retailer is looking for volunteers to help "pick, pack and prepare packages" for wholesale and direct customers, CNBC reported.
The company called the exercise a great team building activity. Employees can sign up throughout the five weekends during October, and in return, get transportation and lunch.
Thus far, the company reports positive responses.
"Many hourly employees also offered to pitch in—an offer which we appreciated, but declined in order to ensure full compliance with all applicable labor laws and regulations," a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement, according to CNBC.
Earlier this week, Urban Outfitters announced the phasing out and eventual ending of on-call shifts in New York, starting in November. As part of the agreement with the state, the retailer will also provide employees with schedules at least one week prior to the start of work.
Other retailers have recently agreed to end on-call shifts, including Abercrombie and Fitch, Gap and Victoria's Secret.
Urban Outfitters had a positive start to the year, reporting a 5 percent comparable sales increase for the first quarter of fiscal 2016. By comparison, Urban Outfitters-owned brands Free People and Anthropologie saw annual comparable sales increases of 17 percent and 1 percent, respectively.
