Tesla drives mall sales

Malls where automaker Tesla has showrooms generate more sales than those without, creating a halo effect for other tenants.

Tesla has stores in 24 malls, and tenants there average $940 in sales per sq. ft. compared to $835 for those without, according to Green Street Advisors.

Whether Tesla helps contribute to higher sales at the mall or whether it's due to these malls being located in more affluent areas isn't known, but the answer is likely a little of both.

The carmaker's presence is akin to Apple's, which operates stores in 75 percent of the top U.S. malls.
