Target expands curbside pickup

Target (NYSE:TGT) has expanded the curbside pickup program to 10 new locations in the New York and New Jersey area. Until now, Curbside has only been available at 11 stores in the San Francisco Bay area.

Target's partnership with Curbside allows customers to shop directly from their mobile phones and pick up the items outside of the store, without having to shop themselves, get in a checkout line, or even park their car. The service and app are free, and Target does not mark up store prices.

"We know today's consumers are looking for faster and more convenient ways to shop. That's why Target is constantly exploring new ways to improve the shopping experience and save our guests time and money," said Casey Carl, Target's chief strategy and innovation officer. "Curbside has proven popular among our Bay Area guests, and we're excited to expand the service to guests in New York and New Jersey."

Curbside uses proprietary location technology to provide Target staff with the information as to when shoppers are approaching. It also keeps track of what's in stock at local stores so that a shopper is guaranteed a product upon arrival.

"Curbside's mission is to make the shopping experience at local stores faster and easier than ever before," said cofounder and CEO Jaron Waldman. "We anticipate that local shoppers in New York and New Jersey will find Curbside to be an invaluable service that fundamentally changes the way they shop."

Earlier this week, Target revealed plans to soon begin testing grocery delivery.

Mobile is incredibly important to Target, particularly as it heads into the holiday season. CEO Brian Cornell has declared mobile to be Target's "front door." The retailer expects to experience twice the average industry growth, thanks to its investments in mobile, Jason Goldberger, president of and mobile, recently told attendees at the eTail East Conference.
