Target beefs up board, former CEOs of Safeway, Clorox

Target elected the former chairman and CEO of Clorox and the former CEO of Safeway to its board of directors.

"Don and Robert each bring a deep understanding of the consumer and a wealth of relevant expertise to Target," said Target CEO Brian Cornell.

Donald Knauss (right) was Clorox's CEO and chairman from 2006 to 2014, and executive chairman from 2014 to July 2015. He was also president and COO for Coca-Cola North America prior to his time at Clorox.

"Don has a lengthy track record of driving the strategic growth of prominent, consumer brands at global companies," Cornell said.

Robert Edwards joins Target's board after being CEO at Safeway from May 2013 to April 2015, and president and CFO from 2012 to 2013. Edwards started at Safeway in 2004 as exec-VP and CFO.

"Robert has held leadership positions in the grocery industry for more than a decade and will offer a fresh perspective on our food reinvention, in particular," Cornell said.

These additions to the board come after several rounds of corporate lay-offs in the first half of the year, totaling more than 2,000 job eliminations, as part of a larger plan to cut $2 billion in costs over the next two years. Press Release
