Staples, Office Depot, one investor away from a merger?

Staples (NASDQ:SPLS) should consider purchasing competitor Office Depot, at least that's what Gary Balter, an analyst at Credit Suisse, believes. He said the deal would reduce operating costs by $1.44 billion and more than double the combined operating profit by 2017. With increasing competition from online retailers such as Amazon, Staples has struggled to make a profit. In conjunction with Office Depot, the two could conceivably become an online office supply powerhouse. Story
