Spring announced the launch of a new app that introduces the social element of shopping to the mobile space. The mobile-only marketplace will allow users to shop directly from a community of brands, reported Women's Wear Daily.
Spring will go live on the Apple App Store and carry products from a broad range of brands, including Everlane, Theory and Carolina Herrera.
Like other social platforms, consumers will be able to follow designers and brands and then purchase from their feeds by swiping. For the moment, the platform is only available on iPhones, with iPad and Android versions in the works.
So far, Spring has 450 brands signed up for compatibility with the app, of which 150, such as Nicole Miller, Helmut Lang, Alice + Olivia and Jason Wu, will be store-ready when the platform launches.
"We put the relationships between brands and customers first, instead of all [other] social networks that start off as user to user, [where] brands were an afterthought," said David Tisch, co-founder and chairman of Spring, whose own venture fund Box Group invested in the company.
Tisch said Spring's approach is to take the best of existing social commerce and use it for a new platform.
Social media platform Twitter was recently rumored to be testing e-commerce offerings within its mobile settings, and Facebook users spotted a "Buy Now" button on some brand pages.
Spring raised $7.5 million in June in a Series A round of funding.
"We wanted to make it the easiest place to sell," Alan Tisch, CEO, said of Spring, which earns its revenue by taking a small transaction fee from brands for every item sold. "We built a business model to incentivize brands to give the best customer experience."
Spring will deduct 50 percent from a transaction fee when a brand offers free shipping, and offer an even lower transaction fee than that for any product launched exclusively on the platform.
