Sears (NASDAQ:SHLD) is opening a connected solutions flagship store in San Bruno, California, the heart of Silicon Valley. The showroom features a living room, kitchen, nursery, workout room, garage and outdoor area so shoppers can try smart technology firsthand.
Simultaneously, the retailer is expanding its selection of smart technology products in stores across the country.
"Sears continues to be the authority in millions of American homes for products across all categories including appliances, fitness, auto, electronics and home," said Ryan Ciovacco, president of consumer electronics and connected solutions at Sears. "Online and in stores across the country, we're leveraging our home services expertise, dedicated technology support and installation network to seamlessly meet the needs of our members, from considering what solutions can simplify their lives to setting them up at home."
Connected home is one of the fastest growing categories in consumer electronics. The technology allows users to control and automate just about every device, from lights to fitness trackers, in their home.
Both in the new Sears location and online, connected solutions is separated into four categories: simply entertaining, connecting everything from music and television to mobile; simply fit, which connects wearable fitness trackers to bathroom scales and at-home gym equipment; simply automated, a way to control electronics, home appliances and lights through a smartphone; and simply secure, which gives alerts for children, pets, doorbells and smoke alarms.
In addition to the flagship, Sears has three, 2,000 sq. ft. connected solutions shops in the Chicago area and is expanding its assortment at hundreds of Sears locations. Sears joins several other retailers that have recently added connected home displays to their stores including Target (NYSE:TGT) and Home Depot.
