REI expands in New York and Florida

REI announced two new store openings in Western New York and Central Florida, in addition to expanded investments in outdoor activities and locations in those markets.

The outdoor retailer will open a 27,000-sq.-ft. store in Rochester, New York this fall, near the city's university and hospital. It will carry merchandise for snow and water sports in addition to the regular assortment due to the proximity to the nearby Finger Lakes.

The planned REI in Winter Park, Florida, is the company's second location in that state. The 25,000-sq.-ft. facility will focus on water sports, hiking and biking, according to a company statement.

With the opening of each new store, REI invests in local organizations to increase access to open spaces. In Florida, REI invested $20,000 in four nonprofit partners in 2015, and a total of $5.9 million in over 300 nonprofits nationally last year.

REI is enjoying increased customer appreciation and goodwill following the much-publicized decision to close on Black Friday, instead encouraging members—as the retailer calls its shoppers—to get outside and share the experiences on social media.
