Thanksgiving Day shopping has become a new holiday tradition, with more retailers than ever before opening their doors while the turkey is still in the oven. With opening hours as early as 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, it's clear that retailers are eager to get a jump start on holiday sales. And for good reason: this year's holiday shopping season is the shortest in over a decade, with only 26 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Holiday shoppers are expected to spend about 3.9 percent more this year than they did last year, according to a National Retail Federation estimate, so in order to cash in on that added revenue, retailers are pushing their Black Friday hours earlier and earlier, right into Thanksgiving Thursday.
