Mobile holiday sales reach $13B

Purchases made on mobile reached $13 billion over the 2015 holiday season. According to research from comScore, mobile purchases increased 59 percent from the year prior, and that is just for the last two months of 2015.

In total, online spending on computers reached $56 billion in 2015, up 6 percent from the previous year, reported MediaPost. And mobile accounted for 18 percent of all online transactions, up from 13 percent.

For all of 2015, retailers are estimating that smartphone sales accounted for 17 percent of all transactions, according to the State of Retailing Online study, based on a survey conducted by Forrester Research for Shop.org. Sales from smartphones grew 53 percent from the previous year.

By despite the growth, retailers are still only moderately spending on mobile. About 30 percent said they invested less than $10,000 on smartphone platforms in 2015 and 17 percent kept budgets between $10,000 and $50,000. And 18 percent left smartphones out of their investment plans entirely last year.

However, in 2016, one third of retailers plan to increase their smartphone investment more than 20 percent and 34 percent will increase spending up to 20 percent.

One in five retailers plan to increase their investments in tablets more than 20 percent this year. Tablets play a big role for sales associates, as 44 percent use them to show products not available in store and 40 percent use them to send receipts to customers.

Mobile topped tablets as a percentage of online sales and traffic for the first time in 2015, according to the State of Retailing Online 2016. In total, smartphones accounted for 17 percent of total online sales versus 14 percent of sales coming from tablets.

Total mobile online retail payment volume more than tripled from 2012 to 2014, according to Javelin's Mobile Online Retail Payments Forecast, and m-commerce is expected to top $217 billion by 2019.
