Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) celebrated its 20th holiday season by releasing positive day-after-Christmas results for its growing Prime subscription service and big jump in mobile activity.
More than 10 million shoppers tried Amazon Prime for the first time representing record growth for the service, according to Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO. The online retailer's November launch of Prime Photos spurred nearly 1 billion photos to be uploaded to the Amazon Cloud Drive.
Amazon has not divulged how many of those shoppers trying Amazon for the first time had registered for the one free month offer. All may not convert to full prime members after the trial period ends.
Mobile activity for Amazon jumped as nearly 60 percent of Amazon customers shopped using a mobile device this holiday, and the pace of mobile shopping accelerated as Christmas drew nearer. Total holiday sales from the Amazon app for smartphones doubled in the United States for 2014.
Cyber Monday continues to be Amazon's peak mobile shopping day while Black Friday had the most rapid growth in mobile shopping. Total holiday sales from the Amazon app for smartphones doubled in 2014 in the U.S. Amazon shoppers worldwide ordered more than 18 toys per second from a mobile device on Cyber Monday alone.
Amazon shoppers ordered more than 10 times as many items with same-day delivery than in 2013, with the final items ordered on December 24 at 10:24 p.m. and delivered at 11:06 p.m., using Amazon's one-hour delivery service. For inquiring minds, that order included three different 12-packs of Bai5, five calorie, 100 percent natural, antioxidant infused beverage, 18-ounce bottles in the flavors Costa Rica Clementine, Limu Lemon and Molokai Coconut.
