Macy's to Open Around the Clock on Christmas Weekend

Macy's (NYSE: M) has become the latest retailer to offer extended hours in an effort to squeeze out the last little bit of the holiday shopping season. A total of 37 Macy's store locations around the country will be open around the clock from 7 a.m. Friday Dec. 20 straight through 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

For the stores that won't be pulling all-nighters, Macy's said it would offer extended hours at almost all of its stores from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. starting Friday Dec. 20 through Dec. 23.

Macy's was one of the first retailers to offer marathon hours leading up to Christmas Day. In 2006, Macy's Queens Center store was the inagural store to open 24-hours, which was a big success for the company. Since then, the trend has expanded throughout the chain, as shoppers crowd into the stores at all hours of the night to cross off items on their gift-giving lists.

Store associates volunteer to work the overnight and extended hour shifts.

"Overnight shopping at Macy's has become a holiday tradition that last minute gift-givers count on to get them through the time crunch of the season," said Peter Sachse, Macy's chief stores officer, in a statement. "Our customers already love to shop with us for the best gifts, but they also love that our stores stay open providing them with the convenience of late-night or early morning hours so that they can shop when they choose."

This season, more stores are joining in on the last-minute 'round-the-clock shopping frenzy. Toys R Us has announced that its stores nationwide will remain open for 87 consecutive hours starting 6 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21 through 9 p.m. Christmas Eve. Kohl's (NYSE:KSS) will also open for 24 hours starting 6 a.m. December 20 through 6 p.m. Christmas Eve.
