Kmart (NYSE:SHLD) is the latest retailer to report a breach in its payment data systems. The company announced the launch of a full investigation in partnership with a leading IT security firm to learn more details of the malware hack.
Early information indicates the breach started in early September and the IT team has since removed the malware that compromised debit and credit card numbers.
To date, the company reports no personal information, debit card PIN numbers, email addresses, or social security numbers were obtained. The retailer does not believe kmart.com customers were impacted.
To further protect Kmart members and customers who shopped in stores during the month of September through Oct. 9, Kmart will offer free credit card monitoring.
"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our members and customers," stated a Kmart release. "We want our members and customers to be aware of the situation and we suggest that customers carefully review and monitor their debit and credit card account statements."
Kmart's breach is one of a slew of malware detections to happen in the retail industry over the past several months. Just last week, Bass & Co. announced a breach. Last month, Supervalu (NYSE:SVU) reported its second data breach in six weeks, around the same time that Home Depot (NYSE:HD) announced that the data breach of its U.S. and Canadian stores had affected 56 million debit and credit cards.
