IRI tech veterans join Mobeam

Mobile beaming technology company Mobeam has a new president and CEO, George Garrick. In addition, Joseph Battoe was named exec-VP of retail and consumer solutions.

Garrick (right) has more than 30 years of experience in the technology industry, including 15 years at IRI where he ultimately served as CEO. He has also been CEO at Flycast communications, PlaceWare, Wine.com, Jingle Networks, Tapjoy and Social Shield. He is currently a board member, investor and advisor for G2 Consultants, with portfolio companies including Bizrate/Shopzilla.

The tech veteran plans to expand Mobeam's technology among retailers, CPG brands and other industries, including transportation and health care, in the U.S., Canada, Europe and China.

"Mobile payment apps are the hottest area in mobile today with billions being invested to allow smartphones to pay at retail in place of cash, plastic cards and paper," Garrick said. "You have SamsungPay, ApplePay, GooglePay in the U.S., and then Alipay, Wechat, and BaiduPay in Asia, just to mention the major ones. \ But with all due respect, every one of these apps is incomplete because they cannot replace bar-coded gift cards or coupons, which represent $20 billion in transactions annually for retailers."

Mobeam has patented light and audio-based beaming technology that overcomes the challenges associated with POS scanners reading barcodes from smartphones. The company currently operates with more than 200 million Samsung phones and is talking to other manufacturers to expand the technology to additional devices in the market.

Garrick's specialty lies in growth stage companies and turnarounds, as he has led one IPO and four exits, which has a combined investor value of nearly $3 billion.

Battoe (left), Mobeam's new exec-VP of retail and consumer solutions, joins the company after five years as senior VP of corporate development at DS-IQ. He was also CEO of Concept Shopping Inc. for 12 years and spent another 10 years as division president at IRI.

"Joe is the one person I know who has the necessary breadth and depth of knowledge and experience in retail operations and technologies which will help us take Mobeam to the next level," Garrick said. Press Release
