Independent Drugstores Jumping On The Upscale Bandwagon

It's not just big drugstore chains like Walgreens (NYSE:WAG) and CVS (NYSE:CVS) that are going upscale in the front of their stores. According to the Detroit News, independent pharmacies are also jumping on the trend, adding wines, organic food and makeup boutiques. They're also getting pharmacists out from behind the glass, offering customers greater accessibility—and, because some stores have private consultation rooms, greater privacy than the old stand-back-here-until-your-turn queues. The retail director for one indy pharmacy said her job now includes selecting the health, beauty and gift items the store sells—but also offering spa nights and coffee tastings, and bringing in beauty-product consultants for free demonstrations.
