Home Depot (NYSE:HD) announced a massive recruiting effort in Canada. The home improvement retailer is hiring 6,300 candidates to fill seasonal, full-time and part-time positions there.
Home Depot plans to have the positions filled by early spring, when stores see a surge in traffic as more people begin home improvement projects and fix cold-weather damage from the winter. Home Depot has also seen a renewed interest in DIY construction as the housing market slowly starts to recover.
The retailer will host 500 career events at locations across Canada to attract new staffers.
Last spring, Home Depot brought on 6,700 workers at the start of spring. More than 28,000 people are employed by Home Depot at 180 stores throughout Canada.
Home Depot is the latest retailer to announce expansion efforts in Canada. Walmart (NYSE:WMT) plans to spend approximately $500 million this year to grow its business in Canada, building 35 supercenter stores and creating more than 7,500 jobs in the country over the next year. Target (NYSE:TGT) will also open nine new stores there by the end of the year.
