Groupon (NASDAQ:GRPN) announced the launch of Snap, a free app that pays shoppers cash for buying groceries and consumer-packaged goods. The app works with weekly featured items at any supermarket or retailer in the United States or Canada.
The customer simply uses his or her phone to snap a photo of the receipt. Any consumer that downloads and submits a receipt through Nov. 11 can enter into a sweepstakes to win a free year of groceries.
Snap features cash-back offers on grocery items ranging from bread and milk to personal care and cleaning supplies.
"Snap is the latest way that we're helping people discover new brands and save money on the things they buy every day," said Sean Smyth, VP and general manager, Snap by Groupon. "We're using the power of smartphones to make couponing easier and more convenient while paying people to shop."
Shoppers can also build a grocery list on the app and add featured items onto that list. Every time a consumer accumulates $20, he or she is eligible to cash out. In addition, consumers who refer the app to a friend through Facebook or their email contact list earn $1 for everyone that opens an account and redeems their first offer.
Smyth added that the new app will reach Groupon's already 92 million global shoppers in a more targeted and personal way.
Groupon purchased SnapSaves from Buytopia back in June. The original app offered shoppers instant cash back on grocery and personal care purchases but only for Canadian customers.
The company is making great strides in the retail industry. In the latest quarter, Groupon announced a 67 percent sales jump in its Goods division, and a 67.4 percent increase in revenue in the first half of the year.
