Google Glass creator jumps to Amazon

The creator of Google Glass (NASDAQ:GOOG) has jumped ship and will join Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), a sign that the online retailer has plans for a wearable of its own.

Babak Parviz posted a cryptic note on Google+ that simply stated "super excited" and featured the Amazon logo. Parviz was the director at Google X, the division responsible for visionary projects (pun intended) that include Glass, self-driving cars and contact lenses with smart capabilities.

Amazon recently launched a wearables store on its website with the intent to grow the category. There will be an educational component to help shoppers learn about the technology and editorial content to deliver industry news and reviews in addition to the usual product reviews and comparisons.

But the debut of Amazon's Fire Phone was a sign that the retailer is serious about developing mobile devices that better enable shopping, on Amazon of course. Wearables are the new frontier. Shipments of smartwatches alone jumped 250 percent in the first three months of this year.

"Wearable technology is an exciting category with rapid innovation and our customers are increasingly coming to Amazon to shop and learn about these devices," said John Nemeth, Amazon's director of wireless and mobile electronics.

Neither Google nor Amazon responded to the LA Times' requests for comment and it's unknown what Parviz's role will be at Amazon. But his presence there means a great deal.
