EBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) announced it will close down three of its stand-alone apps, including Valet, Fashion and Motors, and will no longer operate its on-demand delivery service.
The company claims eBay Now was always a pilot program and will explore other delivery, pickup and drop-off programs that are more relevant and cover more inventory, TechCrunch reported. And the features of the three apps will be integrated into the main eBay app.
EBay Now was already discontinued as a stand-alone app last year when the company decided to rethink same-day delivery. The service had launched in 2012 in San Francisco and was available in San Jose, the Bay Area Peninsula, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Dallas and Chicago. Ultimately, the service could not compete with Amazon, Instacart and Postmates. In November, eBay Now was integrated into the main website and mobile app.
Although Now will discontinue delivery in the United States immediately, it will continue to test in-store pickup in the United States for retail partners such as Best Buy and Toys R Us.
"We've found that the types of things that people buy on eBay aren't necessarily those that are in high demand for same-day delivery, and that same-day options for the most part exclude core eBay sellers who don't have off-line locations," an eBay spokesperson told TechCrunch. "We want to enable the most relevant solutions for our customers, and offer those that are most in line with local shopping and delivery preferences around the world."
In addition, Valet, a mobile version of "Sell for Me," will discontinue as a stand-alone app on Aug. 6 and incorporate into the main app later this year. Fashion and Motors will also shut down, the former in the coming weeks and the latter later in the year. None of these stand-alone apps were very popular.
EBay has implied there may be more cleaning of house in the coming months. The news follows the recent decision to unload its Enterprise business for $900 million and its official split from PayPal (NASDAQ:PAPL) a week ago.
