While it seemed that eBay was trying to distance itself from its local delivery service, it has since expanded a local delivery test.
In mid-November eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) said it was folding eBay Now into its core operations and pulled its app eBay Now app from the App store.
However, this week, eBay said it is expanding its eBay Local pilot program in Brooklyn with the addition of 80 small businesses that will offer same-day delivery and in-store pickup.
eBay now seems to be focusing its "eBay Local" service, which is basically the rebranded eBay Now offerings – with the addition of pickup. eBay Local is offered in limited U.S. markets including Brooklyn, Queens, San Francisco and parts of the Peninsula, San Jose, Dallas and Chicago. In addition, eBay Local operates in certain areas of the U.K., Germany and Australia.
It seems that eBay's new focus is more about working with smaller sellers whose customers may prefer picking up items bought online in stores, TechCrunch reported. "We find that our customers like having choice, based on when they need the item and how much they want to pay to get it," wrote Tom Allason, senior director of eBay's Local initiatives, in a post announcing the Brooklyn expansion.
