EBay adds full-price Designer Collective

EBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) is hoping to grow its reputation as more than an auction site with the addition of full-priced designer duds in the new Designer Collective.

The micro site features men's and women's fashions direct from the brands. In the past retailers have sold through eBay, but this marks a new way for designers to directly reach shoppers.

"[Designer Collective] fits with our philosophy — as partner and an enabler of brands, and not a competitor," Devin Wenig, president of eBay Marketplaces told WWD. "We're transaction-based. We only succeed if our partners succeed."

EBay is simply providing the platform for third parties to sell merchandise. It has no control over the storefronts nor does it own any inventory.

It's part of an effort by eBay to become known as something more than an auction site. More than 70 percent of the product available on eBay is new inventory sold at a fixed price, according to WWD. Wenig estimates that eBay will facilitate more than $90 billion in sales this year, and fashion plays an important role on the site.

Fashion will also play an important role at eBay going forward by continuing to provide a platform for brands to sell direct. "(This is) the next step for us in our fashion category," said Wenig.

The list of high-fashion brands available on eBay's Designer Collective is long and growing. Currently on the site are Alex and Ani, Badgley Mischka, Billy Reid, Cynthia Rowley, Cynthia Vincent, House of Harlow 1960, Kenneth Jay Lane, Ramy Brook, Rebecca Minkoff, Ruffian, Siwy Denim, Tadashi Shoji and True Religion. Halston Heritage, Trina Turk, Rachel Pally, 4.Collective, Jay Godfrey, Tuleste, Raoul, Nicole Romano and Janis Savitt will soon join the collective, according to WWD.

Merchandise is currently only available to ship within the United States but international shipping will be enabled later this year. There are plans to add international designers, as well.

This is considered a soft launch for eBay, which plans to add designers and further build out the site for a more public unveiling this fall.
