DSW to open Yellow Box concept stores

DSW (NYSE: DSW) will open three to five concept shoe stores this year as part of a deal between its Affiliated Business Group and Yellow Box, a women's footwear company. DSW will be conceptualizing, designing and operating the standalone stores under the Yellow Box name.

Developing new footwear concepts is part of the company's growth strategy and creating Yellow Box stores will help the brand target a new customer base, said DSW CEO Mike MacDonald.

No locations were named for the Yellow Box stores, but the companies are eyeing premier shopping destinations in the U.S. The stores are currently in development and will be open by the end of the year.

Yellow Box is a company that designs and manufactures women's footwear. It was founded in 1998 and sells through DSW, DSW.com and other outlets in addition to its website. DSW operates 403 locations nationwide and supplies footwear to over 357 leased locations through the Affiliated Business Group.

Concept stores are a growing trend among retailers looking to create innovative shopping experiences and attract new customers. Ann Inc. (NYSE: ANN) said last month that it is preparing to open four freestanding Lou & Grey concept stores this fall to further expand its successful Lou & Grey loungewear line. The company will also install Lou & Grey boutiques inside current Loft locations.

RadioShack (NYSE: RSH) recently opened two more concept stores, including one in Manhattan as the chain continues to pepper the urban island with shiny new prototypes. The two stores join roughly 25 concept stores that have opened since the company began converting older units in July 2013. All of RadioShack's concept stores feature remodeled interiors and provide interactive areas. Walmart (NYSE: WMT) opened its first Walmart to Go convenience store on March 15 in Bentonville, Ark. The concept store is another pilot for Walmart as it expands the number of small-format stores.
