Disney opens largest Disney Store yet in Shanghai

The Walt Disney Company has opened its flagship Chinese Disney Store in Shanghai, and it is the largest Disney Store yet. The retail space stretches 5,000 sq. meters and includes an outdoor plaza.

"We couldn't be more delighted to open our first Disney Store in China, in Shanghai," said Paul Candland, president of The Walt Disney Company, Asia-Pacific region. "Disney Store plays a critical role in how millions around the world experience our brand and allows kids, young adults and families to have a uniquely fun and immersive experience while shopping for their favorite Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars products."

The storefront officially opened its doors to the public on May 20 at 1:14 p.m., corresponding to a popular social media code among young people that is known as a time to openly express love and long-term commitment.

With an estimated 40 million tourists visiting the Lujiazui area each year, Shanghai's new Disney Store is set to become a world-class destination.

The interior of the store uses the worldwide Disney format, featuring elements unique to the area and bringing to life popular Disney characters. Disney radically redesigned all of its retail stores in 2010 as part of an initiative that began in the U.K.

Other design features in the Shanghai store include a Magic Kingdom Castle, measuring 19 feet high and featuring an hourly musical and projection show. The store will also feature a Marvel area with sculpted statues of several comic characters, a Mickey Mouse-shaped roof sculpted with more than 8,000 LED lights, and a landscaped plaza.

In addition to Disney's successful standalone brick-and-mortars around the world, the iconic company's retail format also hosts shops-in-shops. Disney recently announced a deal with J.C. Penney (NYSE:JCP) to expand its in-store Disney shops to 116 new locations this year. J.C. Penney currently features a Disney shop-in-shop at 565 of its stores.
