Brookshire to debut new format in former Walmart Express units

Brookshire Grocery is buying 25 former Walmart Express stores with plans to convert the locations to a new banner: Spring Market.

Walmart announced it was closing the Express units in January. Brookshire has acquired locations in small markets in Texas and Louisiana.

The name, Spring Market, is a nod to Brookshire's beginnings. The company opened its first store in 1928 on Spring Avenue in Tyler, Texas, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Brookshire is still headquartered in Tyler and operates 152 stores under three banners – Brookshire's, Super 1 Foods and Fresh by Brookshire's – mostly in Texas. The company didn't release any details about the format and only said it would have a "surprising assortment of products at highly competitive prices."

It's a quick turnaround for Brookshire, which was looking for a buyer as recently as October. A month later, management called off the search and said it would focus on its current business.
