Discount retailer Aldi announced it would introduce several new organic product lines. The British chain claims to save customers 25 percent on their normal organic basket as the store continues to offer upmarket products.
The new organic lines will include produce, meats, convenience meals, mother and baby, beers, wines and spirits, reported Food Manufacture. Adding in the new products will grow the store's already organic offerings by 11 percent.
"We know our shoppers want to buy more organic products, but price is often the reason why it's not a regular purchase," Tony Baines, joint managing director for corporate buying at Aldi, told Food Manufacture. "This is why we've launched a 100 percent British organic range at an affordable everyday low price."
The new lines will be available to consumers in the U.K. starting in January.
Aldi recently reported a 65 percent increase in its U.K. profits. Last year sales rose by 36 percent. The brand planned to open 54 new stores in 2014 and 65 next year. The ultimate goal is 1,000 shops by 2022.
Aldi joins a growing list of traditional grocers and discount retailers launching organic and natural food and product lines. The rise in consumer demand for these types of products has helped to lower the prices abroad and in the United States.
Just this week, Kroger's (NYSE:KR) exclusive brand of organic products reached $1 billion in annual sales. The Simple Truth natural and organic foods line, which launched two years ago, has seen consistent sales growth amidst increasing consumer demand. Even drugstores are getting into the business of healthier foods—such as those that offer the Fit Choices CVS snack line.
