A second retailer joins REI and will close on Black Friday

A second Seattle-based retailer said it will join REI and close on Black Friday.

REI said on Monday it would be closed on Black Friday, traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year. Instead, REI is paying employees for the day, encouraging them to enjoy the outdoors, and share their experiences using the hashtag #OptOutside.

Outdoor Research operates a single store in REI's hometown of Seattle, and will join the company's OptOutside campaign.

"REI's decision is monumental," Outdoor Research CEO Dan Nordstrom said. "Our core purpose at OR has always been to inspire more people to get outdoors and through that experience better understand themselves and our planet."

But Outdoor Research is going one step further, and is asking employees to donate to Paradox sports, a nonprofit that assists people with disabilities in exploring the outdoors, according to the Seattle Business Journal. The retailer will donate up to $5,000 for photos submitted with the #OptOutside hashtag.

REI's announcement has garnered a huge amount of press and goodwill from consumers as retailers weigh whether to open, not just on Black Friday, but on Thanksgiving Day, as well.
