Adyen, a global payments technology company, found that as many as 30 percent of all global transactions online are happening on a mobile device.
In the quarterly mobile payments index, which recorded international mobile payments use from July through September, the use of mobile for online transactions was up from 28.7 percent in the second quarter. The United Kingdom continued to lead the market with 46.9 percent of all online transactions taking place on mobile.
Other countries with strong showings include Spain and the Netherlands, which recorded 32 percent of e-commerce transactions on mobile, followed by the United States with 27 percent, Germany with 25 percent, and France with 23 percent.
Among Asian payment methods, the index revealed that 47 percent of payments made with the Japanese card JCB were made on a mobile device. Looking at China, 35 percent of Alipay payments and 23 percent of UnionPay payments were made on mobile.
In Europe, the Dutch online banking payment iDEAL led the pack, with 49 percent of payments made on mobile. For Scandinavia's Open Invoice, 42 percent were on a mobile device.
Using mobile to complete a PayPal transaction was popular in several countries. For example, in the U.S. and the U.K., 40 percent of PayPal transactions were made on mobile.
"Adyen has been focusing on offering mobile-optimized checkout for years now, and with this data demonstrating that up to half of local payment method transactions are taking place on mobile, it is clear that optimizing the payment flow for a smooth mobile checkout is crucial for businesses," said Roelant Prins, chief commerce officer at Adyen.
On the flip side, the use of tablets for making online payments continued to decline, down to 34 percent of all online transactions, compared to 36 percent in the second quarter.
According to new research by Javelin, m-commerce is expected to reach $93.6 billion by the end of 2015, and $217 billion by 2020.
