1-800-Flowers pilots same-day delivery

1-800-Flowers is now offering same-day delivery of flowers and gourmet food gifts via a new partnership with Deliv in the San Francisco market, joining a growing number of retailers offering same-day service.

Once shoppers place an order, they will be able to see real-time delivery tracking online using Deliv's smart routing system. Prices for same-day service are similar to that of standard delivery.

Deliv is a start-up delivery service whose technology integrates directly into 1-800-Flowers' e-commerce site allowing customers to select the same-day delivery option at checkout. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company was founded in 2012, and has partnered with nearly 100 national and regional retailers and malls since its inception.

The partnership comes on the heels of a Valentine's Day nightmare for 1-800-Flowers, which failed to deliver gifts in time for the holiday. Hundreds of customers contacted the company through social media to complain about their Valentine's Day orders not being delivered. 1-800-Flowers apologized for the issues and offered customers a variety of solutions, including rescheduling, refunding and discounts on future orders.

1-800-Flowers joins a growing list of retailers that are finding ways to offer expedited shipping as shoppers increasingly demand faster, cheaper delivery options. Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) said that it would be expanding its Express Shopping service, which offers same-day delivery of groceries, office supplies and household goods from about 15 local retailers. Macy's (NYSE: M) has begun a pilot of same-day service in partnership with eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY), UPS (NYSE: UPS) and FedEx (NYSE: FDX) and local delivery companies across the U.S. Home Depot (NYSE: HD) also said it was gearing up for the launch of a same-day delivery unit and would be investing $300 million to get the program up and running.
