Amazon has launched a new car website to help consumers research and compare vehicles – without actually selling them one.
Amazon Vehicles is a tool for shoppers during the car buying process. Users can view specifications, images, videos and reviews for thousands of new and classic car models.
It leverages the same search program used across Amazon.com to browse by make, model, year, customer rating, mileage and more. There are also customer reviews, perhaps Amazon's most popular and valued feature across categories.
“More and more customers are turning to Amazon for researching products, and now we’re enabling that experience for vehicles – which is one of the most important, research-intensive purchases in customers’ lives,” an Amazon spokeswoman told The Seattle Times.
Amazon Vehicles is an extension of the Amazon Automotive store, which enables customers to add information about their current car to the Amazon Garage for shopping parts and accessories for that vehicle, according to a company statement. To date, more than 35 million customers have saved cars to the Amazon Garage.
The initiative stops short of selling cars, something prohibited by laws that limit the sale of registered items (including firearms) to designated licensed operators. Car buyers are required to purchase from state-licensed dealers.
Nordstrom recently partnered with Tesla to display cars at a Los Angeles location, although shoppers are then referred to a dealer to purchase.
