Albertsons, Wayfair among fastest-growing U.S. retailers
Albertsons and Wayfair made the top of NRF's STORES Hot 100 Retailers chart for 2014 as No. 1 and 2 respectively. The list tracked retailers with the greatest increase in U.S. sales between 2012 and 2013.
Placeholders in the annual Hot 100 Retailer list run the gamut from grocery and discount specialty stores to home furnishing and sportswear retailers, reported the National Retail Federation. All public and private companies with more than $300 million in sales were eligible for the list compiled by Kantar Retail.
Albertstons claimed the top spot, with a sales growth of 432.7 percent between 2012 and 2013. The 2013 sales of $19.5 billion can mostly be attributed to mergers and acquisitions. Still on the growth path, Albertsons' board of directors approved the acquisition of Safeway for $9.2 billion earlier this week.
Home furnishings companies Wayfair and Conn's landed the No. 2 and No. 4 spots. Wayfair had a sales increase of 52.5 percent and Conn's sales grew by 39.2 percent.
"While Albertson's grew mainly by acquisition, Wayfair's ascent is 12 years in the making as this online specialist benefits from renewed consumer interest in sprucing up their homes," said Susan Reda, STORES media editor. "It's becoming a familiar story in our industry—growth stems from new products, innovative thinking and one-of-a-kind customer experiences."
New York-based Michael Kors Holdings (NASDAQ:KORS) made the top 10 for the third year in a row, grabbing the No. 6 spot, with a sales increase of 36 percent between 2012 and 2013.
Other stores that made the top 10 include Under Armour, No. 7, SpartanNash, No. 5, Five Below, No. 9, and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), No. 10. Amazon was among nine retailers that have remained on the Hot 100 list since its launch in 2006. Other retailers that consistently make the list include Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN), J.Crew, Dick's Sporting Goods (NYSE:DKS), Dollar Tree (NASDAQ:DLTR) and Ross Stores (NASDAQ:ROST).
